This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Furoshiki, the traditional Japanese art of cloth wrapping. You will learn about Japanese culture and language through Furoshiki as well as how to wrap a variety of everyday items using a single square piece of fabric. You will build up skills from simple wrapping techniques to more decorative and practical styles. Enjoy using a beautiful piece of cloth and your hands to create elegant gift presentations, bottle wraps, bags and carrying solutions.
What will we cover?
Furoshiki is an important part of Japanese culture and reflects values such as sustainability, creativity and respect for presentation. You will be briefly introduced to the history of Furoshiki and how this traditional wrapping practice continues to be used in everyday life in Japan today. This introduction will be followed by a hands-on Furoshiki workshop in which you will be asked to actively participate and practise a range of wrapping techniques.

Understand the brief history of Furoshiki and its cultural significance. Recognise several common Furoshiki wrapping styles and their uses. Learn and complete at least one practical wrapping techniques
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is open to everyone who is hands-on and willing to have a go! No previous Japanese language knowledge or Furoshiki experience is necessary.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
All students will be asked to participate in the activities, which are supported by PowerPoint slides and tutor demonstrations in Japanese and English. You may be asked to watch some short videos before the workshop.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring one or two square pieces of cloth suitable for Furoshiki wrapping (approximately 50cm to 70cm square is recommended). A lightweight scarf, bandana or dedicated Furoshiki cloth is ideal. A selection of everyday small items for wrapping practice, such as a book, small box or square item, may abe something you would like to offer at Christmas!

Hisaka is a passionate educator of all ages, bringing over 15 years of experience in teaching Japanese language and culture to CityLit. Growing up in Tokyo, Japan, Hisaka initially came to the UK for postgraduate study, specialising in Education. Following a stint working in the City, Hisaka’s focus moved to her love of teaching, becoming a central figure Japanese language learning in the UK through teaching in secondary schools and in adult education. She has also presented training seminars at Japan Foundation, volunteered for the Japanese In Your Classroom Programme of the Japan Society in both primary and secondary schools and is an accredited GCSE/A level subject expert to Ofqual.
