Further cosmology

Course Dates: 02/05/19 - 06/06/19
Time: 19:40 - 21:10
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Tutor: Roger O'Brien

Do you know a bit about cosmology and want to know more? There are intriguing results from the Planck Mission. Many people and some theorists want to know what happened before the big bang. Do we need multi-verses, parallel universes, branes, superstrings? What news from CERN? A chance to delve more deeply into this fascinating subject.

Description

What is the course about?

Cosmology – beyond the popular versions of Big Bang theory.

What will we cover?

Big Bang variants, especially the accelerating model
ALICE, LIGO, Planck etc.
Inflation –necessary factor or annoying fudge?
Many worlds, multiverse etc.
Speculation
The programme is flexible and may be adaptable to students’ requests.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Assess theoretical developments critically
Explain at least one of inflation, multiverse, branes to a layman
Indulge in some gentle cosmological speculation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some prior knowledge of science in general and cosmology in particular is necessary. Ideal for students, who have already completed “Cosmology” at City Lit.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Illustrated presentations leading to class discussions and exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No other costs. Bring a pen and notebook.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
