Explore the historical factors and the conditions which led to the creation of the Italian Renaissance Gardens in the 15th and 16th Centuries. Examine the technical developments and design approach as well as the wider socio economic context. The session will conclude with an assessment of the lasting impact of Italian Renaissance Gardens and our relationship with the natural environment.

What is the course about?

We will explore ancient gardens, medieval gardens, and key discoveries leading up to the Renaissance Garden period. We will assess the Italian Renaissance Garden style by focusing on key gardens and examining the design principles which were applied to create them. Finally we will consider how the style spread north, notably to France and the Netherlands and Garden Design developments in these countries.

- Evaluate developments in Garden Design through the Italian Renaissance period
- Explain the historical context which led to the creation of Italian Renaissance Gardens
- Assess the socio-political and economic factors that influenced the style.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

There are no particular skills needed, just an interest in learning about Garden History.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be a combination of lectures, backed by PowerPoint presentations, and discussions in large and small groups. Handouts will be provided in class.
