What is the course about?

This yoga course focuses on gently improving your sense of balance while helping with flexibility, strength and relaxation. The emphasis is on participating at your own pace. Please contact the department if you are concerned about suitability.

What will we cover?

The class will start with relaxation and joint movement to prepare the body and mind for the gentle standing yoga postures (asanas). The course is progressive, with various options and adaptations provided to enable you to progress at your own pace.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform basic gentle yoga postures to help with flexibility, strength and balance
- Practise relaxation with guidance

- Be more aware of posture that enhances everyday balance and movement

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to able to get up and down to the mat and feel comfortable both lying and standing to get the most from this course.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Instructions, explanations, demonstrations, feedback
- Q&As
- Individual practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If you have never done yoga before, advice will be given when the course commences as to what else might be useful. Wear loose comfortable clothing. Layers are useful to accommodate changes in body temperature during different aspects of the class. Any standing postures are performed barefoot or in non-slip socks. This is really important to assist balance. Please do not eat a heavy meal at lunchtime. A light snack a couple of hours before the class is fine.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue to develop your sense of wellbeing and balance, continuing with yoga or other health and wellbeing course
