What is the course about?

To enable students to talk about literature, enlarge their vocabulary and enable them to understand and discuss complex topics.

What will we cover?

Literary excerpts, short stories and/ or a play and discussion of these.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

Based on C1 criteria, individual learning outcomes will be discussed at the beginning of the course.

You will be able
• to develop an understanding of extended speech even when it is not clearly structured

• to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style

•to express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes; formulate ideas and opinions with precision and relate your contribution to those of other speakers.

• to present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects integrating sub-themes, developing particular points and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.

• to express yourself in clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For students with a very good knowledge of German in all areas and a fairly wide range of vocabulary. Students own contributions and suggestions are welcome. C1

It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology such as: the subjunctive, the conditional, the dative, the accusative, subordinate clauses and conjunctions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Based on students speaking and listening as much as possible. Group work and pair work. The class is taught entirely in German.

This course, conducted almost entirely in German, uses a useful course book - Der treffende Ausdruck - but the friendly and experienced tutor supplemented this with extra material. An excellent course for vocabulary building and polishing one's grammar, with ample opportunity to practise speaking in German.

A very enjoyable mix of literature and culture from the German speaking world with plenty of opportunities for conversation. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to practice their conversation skills
