What is the course about?

Exploring 3 dimensional outcomes for traditional printmaking plates: surface, materials and relief with plaster.

What will we cover?

session1 – inking and casting your intaglio plates in plaster – please bring in several plates (1-5) no larger than 21 x 29.7 cm – A4. We will also provide a limited number of plates in case you can’t bring your own.
session 2 – Inking and casting plates in plaster
Session includes inking, casting and finalising casts.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Recognise, ink and print an intaglio plate in plaster
• Demonstrate the skills used casting a traditional plate to create a low relief.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for intermediate students (those with limited printmaking skills and more experienced printmakers who want to try out new ideas).
You should be able to follow verbal instructions and follow demonstrations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals.
There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience therefore group discussions and feedback are encouraged.
Small preparation tasks between each session are useful as this will maximise your time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials are provided.
Please bring along existing plates that you may feel are suitable for embossing or casting, i.e intaglio plates, no larger than 21x29.7cm -A4. A note pad and a black permanent marker / sharpie are extremely useful.
No open toed footwear please.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

After this course you may want to consider trying other intaglio print processes, a more general print course, the upcoming VS987 Experimental etching (to develop heavily textured intaglio plates which you can cast at home) or attending the City Lit Prersonal print projects sessions.

Rolina Elsje Blok Tutor Website

Rolina E. Blok is an artist of Dutch/Romanian origin based in London. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a speciality in Contemporary Approaches to Printmaking. Blok’s practice expands into the digital realm as well as printmaking, sculpture, performance art and curating. Blok is part of the Visual Arts team at City Lit and is currently a Screenprint Fellow at the Royal Academy. I think that working with the other tutors we can inspire and help the students advance in their practice and explore the creative potential within combined digital and print media. I am an advocate for experimentation and would like to instigate conversations surrounding the relationship between the physical realm and the digital world. The method is the vessel for the message to be portrayed. From pixel to halftone and back again.. @rolinablok #rolinablok rolina.blok@citylit.ac.uk
