What is the course about?

How Europeans interacted with Africa and its inhabitants before the Age of Colonialism.

What will we cover?

We will trace the medieval and early modern encounters between Europe and Africa, in particular, the African kingdoms of Mali and Kongo.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Outline the changing European attitudes towards Africa and its inhabitants between 1300 and 1600
- Describe the political and cultural impact of the Portuguese presence in the kingdom of Kongo in the sixteenth century.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for anyone with an enquiring mind and an enthusiasm for history. No previous knowledge is
necessary but a good understanding of English is essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be a PowerPoint presentation to illustrate key points and reading of contemporary extracts (in translation).

There will also be whole group discussion. You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Vanessa King is a reitred university lecturer in Medieval and early Modern History. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Honorary Fellow of Birkbeck College University of London. At City Lit, Vanessa offers courses and day schools on London, European, and Global Encounters in the Far East. She has published widely on the Anglo-Norman period (1066-1154), and is currently writing a book on Early English Queenship 600-1066 for Routledge.
