What is the course about?

This is an exploration of Graphic Design through a series of typographic and layout exercises that can then be applied to a wide range of design projects. You will be encouraged to explore the basic design principles through a creative use of drawing, photography and collage. There will be an emphasis on an experimental approach in developing your ‘looking’ and ‘seeing’ skills. These ideas will be developed through challenging design briefs for poster design, magazine covers, branding, logo design and a range of graphic material.

Please note this is not a computer software course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Have an understanding of the basic design principles in Graphic Design
- Have an understanding of layout design
- Demonstrate an awareness of effective visual communication
- Critically evaluate design work in order to develop ideas further
- Present visual ideas in a sketchbook form.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is ideal for complete beginners or anyone interested in trying out different approaches to working on design work. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, individual tutorials as well as group discussion. This course is also supported by Google classroom and you will have access to additional information, handouts and resources throughout the duration of your course. Guidence on how to access googleclassroom will be sent out before your first session.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials and equipment is provided. Please however bring with a sketchbook of your choice and selection of black fine liner pens. Additional materials or equipment required will be discussed by your tutor.

Gillian Fielden Tutor Website

Gillian Fielden has been lecturing in Graphic Design and Adobe Design applications at a number of colleges since 2003. In 2018 she completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Visual Communication at UAL LCC and she has Masters Degree from Nottingham Trent University specialising in printed graphics & branding for fashion. Before becoming a lecturer Gillian had extensive commercial experience designing for a variety of fashion and new media companies, producing graphics and merchandising for garments and later moving into web design and production. Currently freelancing on various music design projects and having designed for companies that include, Joe Bloggs, Burton, Littlewoods, BHS, Macmillan Publishers, ITN, IPC and Lycos, she brings a wide range of industry knowledge and experience to her teaching. In 2010 she become involved with the ‘Pop Up Art School’ at ‘Vintage Festival’ running stencil, print and collage workshops at various events around the country.
