What is the course about?
In Part 1, workshops are designed to encourage new ways of working and how to think creatively: using both hands-on and digital techniques exploring a diverse range of industry related practices. You will use multiple techniques covering; the use of text and image in layout design, how to generate imagery and develop skills in visual problem solving. You will learn how the five graphic design principles: contrast, balance, hierarchy, repetition and alignment will shape and inform your design work.
In our fully equipped studio you will gain introductions on using the latest professional Adobe software; in Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. There will be an emphasis on creative thinking and developing visual language to help communicate your ideas more effectively. The course is taught by a team of specialist practitioners to help guide you through every aspect of graphic design.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Present visual solutions to design briefs.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Part 1 is perfect for beginners or for those wishing to pursue a passion for graphic design and build their confidence in this area. You should have a basic knowledge in using computers including the ability to create, save and retrieve files. We use Apple Mac computers in our digital studio that you will be inducted and guided through as part of your course.
Students should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will be invited to take part in group discussions and you should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is taught by a team of experienced practicing designers through engaging workshops, creative exercises, design briefs, tutor demonstrations, illustrated talks and individual / group tutorials. The City Lit Graphic Design course requires a high level of commitment, therefore working independently outside the studio is strongly encouraged.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Students will need an A4 or A5 size sketchbook for recording information and ideas. We also advise students to have an A3 size plastic folder/portfolio with clear pockets to assemble a portfolio of work. Plus a memory stick or a mac formatted external hard-drive to store and save digital working files.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
CityLit Graphic Design Part 1 is intended as preparation for progression onto CityLit Graphic Design Part 2 – VK414 B. Guidance on progression beyond Part 1 will be provided on the course.
