What is the course about?
The course will provide the opportunity to explore typography and layout with an emphasis on experimentation and play using a combination of both hands-on (cut and paste) and digital computer skills to reach a creative solution. There will be an emphasis on generating and visualising ideas, taking risks and being experimental with both type and image.
What will we cover?
- Typography and layout
- The relationship between type and image
- Information hierarchy
- Lateral thinking.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate an awareness of effective visual communication
- Demonstrate an understanding of type conventions; spacing, alignment, size and character
- Critically evaluate your own design work and the work of your peers in order to develop ideas further
- Present visual ideas in a sketchbook form.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Ideal for those who have completed the City Lit Graphic Design stage 1 course (or similar) and are keen to explore visual communication in more depth, or for those wishing to develop different approaches to design work. Basic skills using Illustrator or Photoshop would be beneficial.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a series of practical exercises, presentations, one to one tutorials and group discussion. Some extra work involving independent research will required between classes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
A4 or A5 sketchbook, a set of fine liner black pens, A4 plastic sleeves for your final design work and a memory stick (USB) to save any scanned (digital) files.
