What is the course about?
The course is about exploring and practising learning about different aspects of facilitating groups/teams.
What will we cover?
Role of a facilitator.
Styles of facilitating.
Roles individuals may take on in Groups.
Stages of group development.
Types of interventions to use with groups.
The course assumes that the more aware you are of what goes on in groups the more likely you are to be able to
facilitate groups. Attention will also be given to the often unspoken stuff that goes on in groups but that nevertheless
can have a big impact on the atmosphere and tasks of groups. A suggested reading list will be provided.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Identify different styles of facilitating.
Describe different types of interventions to make with groups.
Identify different roles that often exist and may be desirable in groups/teams.
Outline stages of group development.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for anyone (team managers, those in helping/therapeutic professions, volunteer group leaders etc.) working with groups; whether new to or wishing to improve leading/facilitating groups/teams. We all have a wealth of experience of groups because we grow up in them: family, school etc. However no specific experience of
facilitating groups is needed in order to attend.
Please note the experiential nature of the course will require you to be willing to take part in the exercises and
discussions and to use your own experience as material to learn from.
This includes the requirement to express yourself clearly, fluently and accurately in English.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
It is an experiential course that includes input on theory and group discussion. There will be individual, partner and small and whole group work. You will be required to carry out some experiential homework between the two days of the course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other costs. Handouts will be provided during the course however please bring paper and pens.
