Topics will include European settlements; the Haitian Revolution ;the demands made by France for reparations; tensions and conflicts with France, the Dominican Republic and the USA; the cult of personality of François ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier and his son ‘Baby Doc’; and the turbulent politics of the post-Duvalier era. We will explore religion, folklore and the uses and abuses of voudou; the impact of natural disasters on the economy and social stability; and the challenges still faced by Haitians in public health and education services on the island.
