What is the course about?

This course is for experienced learners who wish to incorporate colourwork into their knitting. You will try a series of techniques such as Intarsia, Fair Isle or mosaic.

What will we cover?

• Choosing and playing with colour
• Striping techniques
• The basics of advanced colourwork techniques such as fair Isle, intarsia and mosaic knitting, the differences and, between the techniques and how to progress with them in confidence
• How to follow colourwork charts
• Tips and tricks for working with colour

Returning learners will be encouraged to build upon the techniques covered and experiment with pattern sampling.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Develop a confidence in choosing and playing with colour
• Know the difference between fair Isle, intarsia and mosaic knitting and how to progress with them with confidence.
• Confidently follow a colour chart
• Begin to confidently follow a pattern made with one or more of the colourwork techniques

For returning learners the techniques covered should be solidified to be able to continue with colourwork into personal projects after the course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for improving and experienced knitters. You may have completed our previous beginners or improvers courses. This course is aimed at those who would like to experiment more with the medium, to develop more personalised work. You must know and be confident in using the basic stitches of knitting to make the most from this course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be hands-on, taught by demonstration, group and individual tuition. You will be taken through the techniques with a group demonstration, repeating and practising the advanced techniques of knitting. You will be supported individually as necessary.

Each separate technique will be practised, and then a sample made for reference in a file or sketchbook. You will be encouraged to begin a knitted techniques folder or book in which to keep samples, swatches, handouts and any note-taking you find useful. There will be recommendations for relevant books and shops, and a website list, which will help develop your skills outside the class.
You will be encouraged to practice each new technique in between the classes, to support your progression and also research knitting patterns and designs that exemplify how techniques and textures can be achieved.

The course is supported by Google classroom as an e-learning virtual environment where handouts, and useful information will be stored. Details on how you can access the portal will be provided before the course starts. You will need to login into our Google classroom before our sessions starts where all course materials will be stored. Details on how to access this will be provided in advance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
Please bring along a pair of 4 mm needles and a selection of coloured yarn, at least 2 different coloured balls (correct thickness for needle size) for practising new advanced stitches. There will be yarn and needles provided for use in class, but it is handy to have your own equipment for continuing to practice outside of the classroom.
Sketch books or files are also advisable so you can collect visual information, record any new techniques and collect handouts.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
