What is the course about?

In this classroom based course, gentle yoga postures are combined with breathing and movement to help stretch the body and calm the mind. Relaxation, meditation and visualisation are taught and practised. The emphasis is on participating at your own pace in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Please contact the department if you are concerned about suitability.

What will we cover?

The class will start with relaxation and joint movement exercises to prepare the body and mind for the gentle yoga postures (asanas). The course is progressive, with various options and adaptations provided to enable you to progress at your own pace.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform basic gentle yoga postures to help improve your flexibility,
- Practise relaxation with guidance
- Combine breathing and movement to de-stress
- Describe some of the benefits of yoga.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to read and write short sentences, follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If you have never done yoga before, advice will be given when the course commences as to what else might be useful. Wear loose comfortable clothing. Layers are useful to accommodate changes in body temperature during different aspects of the class. Any standing postures are performed barefoot or in non-slip socks.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any other Yoga course at the beginners level.

Madlyn Ray-Jones

Madlyn is an experienced yoga teacher and massage therapist who loves to share the joy and transformative power of yoga with with people of all ages and abilities. Having trained in Hatha and Perinatal Yoga, Madlyn now weaves together strength training, restorative movement, and stretching, in gentle sequences. Madlyn’s classes always include breathing exercises, meditation and deep relaxation. Her compassionate style of teaching encourages students to adapt the practice as needed, and to connect with their breath, move mindfully, and relax deeply. Madlyn teaches for organisations, yoga studios, and gyms, as well as teaching and massaging private clients, and leading yoga retreats. Madlyn is a dedicated mum to 2 kids, a dog and a cat, and is a disability advocate, supporting individuals with complex needs. Courses at City LIt include Mixed Level: Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and online Light weights for everyday strength.
