This course will introduce you to the techniques involved in the application and firing of opaque and transparent vitreous enamels on copper. We will explore ways of using enamels to create colourful, textural pieces using stenciling, sgraffito, printing with enamel and basse-taille. Many of these techniques can also be used and adapted for use on silver. You will be encouraged to develop and explore your ideas for enamel in your own work. Suitable for complete beginners and those with some previous experience.
What will we cover?
Preparation of metal surfaces and enamel
Sifting and wet laying opaque and transparent enamels
Use of counter enamel (enamel on the reverse)
Making and using stencils
Sgraffito with enamels to achieve patterns and visual textures
Using hammers, punches and rolling mills to create textured metal surfaces (basse-taille) under transparent enamels.
Printing with enamels
Use of gold luster to add sparkle to finished pieces
Finishing techniques such as glossy and matt enamel
Designing enamel and how to incorporate enamel into jewellery, 2D and 3D projects.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...

Make a range of samples to be incorporated as jewellery, 2D or 3D pieces.
Prepare, use and fire enamels in the kiln
Apply good health and safety in the workshop.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for beginners and those with some previous experience.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The process will be shown step by step through group demo’s and you will have 1:1 guidance from your tutor. You will create a series of samples which you will use to develop designs and ideas for jewellery, 2D and 3D pieces. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged. Between sessions you are encouraged to keep a sketch book or scrap book of design ideas and to prepare metal for enamelling.
You must be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
General tools and equipment will be supplied. A reasonable amount of copper sheet and wire are available for your use. You will need to supply your own sketchbooks/notebooks. If you wish to cut and prepare your own shapes for enamelling your tutor will advise you what you need and where to buy it. Please bring a notebook and pencil. Bring an apron to protect your clothes if you have one.
You may wish to bring inspirational examples of colours, textures and patterns that you wish to develop. These could be photographs, found items, drawings etc. If you have your own ideas for enamel designs then bring these with you to discuss with your tutor.
You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn. For health and safety reasons, no sandals, open shoes & small pumps can be worn - even in hot weather. Hair and scarves must be tied back.
Bring reading glasses and/or magnifiers if you need them to see close-up details.
