What is the course about?

This course focuses on Indian Hindu wedding customs, traditions, celebration and related rituals and ceremonies. The significance of wedding in Indian society and match making along with related music& dance and its influence on popular culture- Bollywood.

What will we cover?

North Indian Hindu wedding customs, traditions, celebration and related rituals and ceremonies. The significance of wedding in Indian society and match making along with related music& dance and its influence on popular culture- Bollywood.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Understand the significance of marriage in Indian society
-Learn the customs and traditions
-Learn about the wedding celebration- music & dance
-Learn about the actual ceremonies & rituals
-Learn the Hindi words for – ceremonies, rituals and customs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s course. No particular skill is required, but a spirit of enquiry! The course will be taught in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will consist of a presentation, handouts along with audio and video clips. There will be no work outside the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no extra costs. A pad and a pen for notes might be useful.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Attend Beginner’s Hindi Language course and learn more about the diverse Indian culture and language, as well as prepare yourself for a trip to India.

Sabrina Osborne

Sabrina graduated from Aligarh Muslim University, India with a BA in Hindi & Sanskrit in 1990 and was awarded three University Gold Medals. Sabrina then went on to study Fine Art for a BFA & MFA in 1994 and 1996 respectively from Delhi University, India and an MA in Art Practice at Goldsmiths College, London University in 2007-9. Sabrina has 7 years of experience in teaching Hindi- her first language. She enjoys using audio/visual resources and activities in language teaching along with her own original teaching materials. Her in-depth knowledge of the language and teaching experience with specially designed lessons make her lessons very enjoyable. Her cultural inputs and anecdotes provide a deeper understanding of her fascinating country - India. Her research interests include contemporary Hindi in urban/rural settings and in Bollywood. She is also a proofreader for Hachette. Recently she reviewed the Hindi Grammar book for Routledge.
