    Location on this date:  Online

    Tutors:  Siv Jansson
'Before Charles Dickens became a novelist, he was a journalist, and he remained one throughout his life. Interested in an enormous range of subjects and particularly concerned with what he saw as social injustices, Dickens the journalist used his platform as a magazine editor to meditate on varied subjects, such as the railways, travel, poverty, the city, social unrest, law and order, and entertainment. In his journalism we see the qualities of the novelist combined with the realities of Victorian life at all social levels: these essays add to our understanding of what created and sustained Charles Dickens as well as giving a vivid insight into mid-Victorian culture and society.'.
