Discover the history and changing fortunes of these areas now considered to be trendy London hotspots. Shoreditch, Dalston, Bermondsey, Peckham, Brixton, Walthamstow, Stoke Newington, Deptford and Hackney all feature. There will be an initial classroom lecture followed by a series of walking tours.

What is the course about?

The changing face of areas which are now seen to be fashionable but were once areas to be avoided. How have they changed? What made them change?

What will we cover?

Changing face of London, Poverty to Regeneration, Urban Landscape, Housing, Local industries, Markets, Green Spaces, Creativity, Street Art, Places of Entertainment, Famous Residents.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Know how to navigate the areas studied and have better knowledge of their history an topography.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for anyone interested in London history. Should be able to undertake a two hour walking tour at a moderate pace.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

ne lecture in the classroom and 9 walking tours. Handouts, discussion, talks by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Suitable clothes for the time of year, comfortable walking shoes and an umbrella in case of rain.
