What is the course about?
This course will equip you to do the job of an administrator well. You will gain an insight into the type of work an administrator does as well as learn the essential skills needed to stay on top of your work - including how to plan, prioritise, create schedules, manage on-line files and emails, communicate effectively in person, on the phone and on-line including emails, organise and conduct meetings, take minutes and summarise information. You will take away key principles and practical skills to enable you be a confident and competent administrator.
What will we cover?
We will cover the key areas needed to be an administrator, including:
• how to plan, prioritise, create schedules - including using Outlook to keep track of what you need to do
• managing on-line files and emails - including how to create an effective file and email management system
• how to communicate effectively in person, on the phone and on-line including emails
• how to format and lay out an official letter in Word
• organising and conducting meetings
• taking minutes and summarising information
•managing simple basic data through Excel.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for those who wish to be an administrator or who wish to develop their current office skills. The course will require a degree of competence in Word and Outlook so you are advised to complete our Introduction to Word and Introduction to Outlook courses if you are not already using these programs. Our Introduction to Excel course might also be beneficial to you.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be a practical course that will also enable to you grasp key principles of being an administrator. You will examine different scenarios which mirror the office lif, will role play office tasks and carry out administrative activities. You will be expected to do homework activities to ensure you get the most out of this course.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need to bring pen, paper and a folder. You will also benefit from having access to a computer so you can use Google Classroom for work outside the lesson.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
This course is part of our How to be an Administrator series. If you are ready, you can moved to How to be an administrator: time management skills and How to be an administrator: the paperless office. Other courses you could do either before or after this course include: Touch-typing and Keyboard Skills, IT Skills for the Office (introductory or intermediate), Office 365: an introduction, English for the Office with digital skills (L1-L2). We also run a range of courses in Microsoft Office programs specifically designed to help you in the workplace.
