What is the course about?

On this course you'll get an overview of how the media operate; what makes a saleable story and, how you can use this knowledge to get your business, product or personal story into the press.

The Tutor: Helen Croydon is an author, journalist and broadcaster. Her first book, a fictionalised dating memoir, became a WHSmith bestseller in 2011. She’s also written a narrative non-fiction about modern models of relationships and her third book, out next year, is a memoir about transforming from city girl to endurance athlete. As a journalist she’s written for newspapers including the Telegraph, Times, and Independent, and for magazines such as Cosmo and Outdoor Fitness. She regularly reviews papers on Sky News or the BBC News Channel and works as a freelance producer for ITV News. She is also a successful media coach.

What will we cover?

- The different types of modern media: how different platforms of modern media operate and plan their news agenda, such as newspapers, weekly magazines, monthly magazines, digital media (online), TV and radio.

- What makes news, using real examples of current news stories we’ll discuss the different ways things become news and why.

- What makes features, using real examples of recent features in papers, magazines and online, you’ll learn the essential ingredients of a story and the different formats such as first-person pieces, tips, reportage or reviews.

- Being found: you’ll learn essential tools so you can be found by news editors and producers when they are looking for stories which relate to your expertise or circumstances.

- Writing a pitch: how, when and what to put in a pitch or a press release. And who to send it to.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand how different media platforms operate and the timescales for planning stories.
- Understand what journalists and editors look for in a story
- Identify story formats that could fit your pitch.
- Know when, to whom and what to pitch.
- Have some tools to build your online presence so you can be found by journalists.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suited to business owners, entrepreneurs, aspiring writers and artists or anyone who wants to raise their profile. Students whose first language is not English will need to be fully competent in speaking and listening in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The day course will comprise of talks, discussion, short writing exercises and presentations, with opportunity for group feedback and evaluation.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Something to write with in the form of pen and paper or a tablet.
