An exploration of the political, social and theological worlds in which the great Florentine poet moved and was deeply immersed in, with constant reference to his poetry.
What will we cover?
We shall look at the complex political and social world of 13th century Florence and Italy, the tangled relations between Popes and Emperors, and the world of burgeoning Christian spirituality and mysticism that surrounded it all.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
By the end of the course, students will hopefully have deepened their understanding of Dante’s cultural and historical environment, which will add to their enjoyment of his poetry.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No prior knowledge of Dante is needed, but it would of course be helpful if students had some basic knowledge of the Divine Comedy and had tried reading even small parts! In general, an open mind and a willingness to listen and respond to ideas with which you may not always agree are more important than specific levels of skill.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Tutor presentation, handouts and discussion.

Karl White completed a Ph.D on the Romanian-French philosopher EM Cioran at King’s College London, having originally been educated at University College Cork. He has tutored students of all ages at university level in various areas such as Philosophy and Literature, Philosophy and Film, and Classical Civilisation. He has published work on Samuel Beckett and written educational works on Shakespeare. He believes in making philosophy accessible to people of all backgrounds and educational levels and promoting lively and open discussion in the shared journey of learning.
