What is the course about?
We will evaluate the independence movements of countries in South America under Spanish rule, and focus on the important roles of Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín in the fight for freedom. Themes explored include diplomatic and defence relations, politics and ideology.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?
• Colonial Rule: The nature of Spanish colonial rule, including the administrative structure, economic systems, and social hierarchies in South America
• Simón Bolívar: The campaigns and vision of Bolívar, known as "El Libertador," who played a pivotal role in the liberation of several South American countries
• José de San Martín: San Martín’s contributions, particularly in Argentina, Chile, and Peru
• The role of Indigenous Peoples and the enslaved: the involvement and impact of indigenous peoples and enslaved Africans in the independence movements
• Key Battles and Campaigns: major battles, strategies, and turning points in the various wars of independence.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Understand the independence movements of Spanish-speaking South America
• Know the roles of key liberators such as Bolívar and San Martín
• Describe the importance of politics and ideology on achieving independence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Everyone is welcome, although a good standard of English is required. As with all of our history and politics classes, an open mind and ability to engage constructively and respectfully in class activities is essential.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through lectures, group discussions and the exploration of scenarios and case studies. There will be some basic preparatory reading from week to week to enhance your learning, as well as more optional recommended reading.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs, but please bring a pen and a notebook or laptop or tablet if you wish to take notes.

Dr. Maísa Edwards holds a Joint International Relations PhD from King’s College London and the University of São Paulo. Her doctoral research focused on Brazil, the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic and the South Atlantic region. She also has an MSc in Brazil in Global Perspective from King’s College London and a first degree in French and Spanish from University College London. Maísa also has a keen interest in multilingual and multicultural literature and has run the Talk Books With Me (@talk_books_with_me) project since February 2021.
