What is the course about?

This online course will examine through the emergence of the British New Wave of writers and directors, a new style of acting performance that paved the way for the working class to find a voice in British cinema.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone can be used if you don't have a computer but please note the experience may be less optimal.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Looking at the careers of the British actors who changed film acting in the 1960s including Albert Finney, Rita Tushingham, Alan Bates, Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay and Julie Christie, we will consider their use of acting techniques and how they changed the shape of film performance to this day.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Have a better understanding to the background and components to the British New Wave of actors and the practical elements they employed.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is designed for all levels to view, discuss and enjoy film acting technique.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Screenings of extracts from the actors’ films, along with discussing film analysis in small and large groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Pen and paper. The tutor will provide all film extracts.

Graham Rinaldi is a freelance film lecturer and writer. He is the author of the biography on the British comic actor, Will Hay and he is currently researching his next book, the acting career of David Bowie.
