What is the course about?
This short four-session course follows on from InDesign stage 2 (or equivalent experience) and builds on your existing InDesign skills and explores topics in greater depth. It concentrates on enhancing your productivity and giving you greater control over InDesign’s design, layout, pre-press and typographic features.
What will we cover?
- Working with tables and tabulated text
- Looking at reusable items – setting up new profiles and presets
- Managing and creating complex styles to enhance design
- Planning, combining and synchronising complex documents
- Adding interactivity to an InDesign document and exporting to pdf.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create and style a table
- Set up and export a pre-flight profile
- Create and apply an object style containing a paragraph style
- Synchronise styles across a book
- Create and export an interactive pdf.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You need to be familiar with InDesign having completed City Lit’s InDesign: stage 1 and stage 2 courses, or have had equivalent experience. If you haven’t done the InDesign Stage 2 course please check the course outline to see that you are familiar with what it covered. You should also be able to follow quite complex written instructions for the handouts and be a confident and competent computer user.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Animation, Cartooning, Digital arts, Film, Graphics, Illustration, Photography and Web design.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can further develop your skills and interest in Graphic design through a range of courses at the City Lit in graphics, web design, Photoshop, and animation. You can search on the web site or request a printed prospectus from the City Lit home page.
