What is the course about?

The course is designed for those wanting to practically experience the process of acting. It is ideal for total beginners or for those returning to acting after some time away. It is an opportunity to improve your overall confidence in yourself and in performing as you explore a range of acting exercises. Learning is through fun simple exercises that begin with theatre games and build towards scene work. An opportunity to develop your creative skills in exploring character in a range of scenarios.

What will we cover?

Drama games and group exercises
Improvisation
Creating a character
Basic scene analysis
Status work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Work more openly with others
Communicate more successfully
Work confidently in dealing with the process of creating a character
Perform a short scene with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners and those returning to acting following a break.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Your tutor will use a range of practical exercises including whole group and pair work.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear soft shoes and comfortable clothing that you can move freely in. Bring something to write with.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Gemma Kerr

Gemma is an experienced acting teacher and theatre director. She has run her own company and worked on productions of different scales, including many drama school productions. Her recent production of To Have to Shoot Irishmen by Lizzie Nunnery ran at Omnibus Theatre in October 2018, gaining 4-star reviews in The Guardian and The Stage, before a national tour including dates at the Liverpool Everyman. In November 2017 Gemma was the second recipient of the Air B2B residency offered by People’s Palace Projects and the British Council, and spent a month in Rio de Janeiro as the artist in residence at Casa Rio. Gemma is an Associate Artist of Omnibus Theatre, and Associate Director of Forward Theatre Project. She runs High Hearted Theatre with Marcelo Dos Santos and works as a Script Reader for the Literary Department at the Royal Court Theatre London and for the Bruntwood Prize. Gemma is an Associate Teacher at RADA, and also teaches and directs at City Lit and Identity School of Acting. She is a commissioned artist for Mothers Who Make, developing a podcast about taboos surrounding women’s bodies.
