Description

What is the course about?

Learn to expand your learning through the process of making while experimenting and exploring our own creative ideas for textile printing. We will use a variety of materials and printing techniques challenging ourselves to create original and exciting samples including making our own printing tools.

What will we cover?

You will learn how to use the heat press to transfer materials like flock and vinyl into different textiles overlaying prints and finishes. Develop your knowledge of using screen print inks, foiling and using hand cut stencils. You will also make freehand prints with your own handmade stamps. There will be a practical demonstration of the sublimation process and the possibility to mix and overlap printing techniques as you wish.

Although this course will be very practical, you will have an overview of colour and shape theory and some design principles helpful to design prints. You will finish the course with a swatch book made out of your own unique print samples.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Make a mood board based on a theme
- Design patterns for textile printing
- Use the heat press to transfer free hand cut flock, glitter and vinyl
- Design and print using stencils for screen printing with inks and foil
- Make your own stamps for block printing
- Experience a sublimation printing example
(We will choose one image as a group, print it and transfer it to three different textiles using the heat press)
- Combine different printing techniques
- Develop and refine your own creative style

Advanced learners can prepare files for week 5 after agreeing with tutor (some additional costs may apply for sublimation materials).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for intermediate students who would like to further develop techniques and methods, and combine them. Everyone will have the opportunity to use the equipment, tools and materials provided as well as getting advice to keep working on these techniques at home.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support each class, handouts and for heath and safety information.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and individually when required. Informal group discussions and feedback will be part of each class, and handouts will also be given. Samples will be shown and students will be supported with images on books and online links.

During the fourth week, students are invited to bring a high quality digital image on an USB device. We will choose one of them as a group that will be printed and sublimated during the following class.

Students can work on their sketchbooks and mood boards outside the classroom to enrich their sessions. There will be some suggested homework that has been designed to support and develop students’ learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials will be supplied but you may want to bring some special fabric or garment you may want to print onto. You will need to bring a sketchbook with inspiration or the project you are working on to develop into printing samples.
If you want to develop additional sublimation prints then an addition cost may occur.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

VX441 Textiles: Stitch and applique
VX447 Textiles: Natural Dye and Colour
VX442: Digital surfaces.
