What is the course about?

You will develop a foundational understanding of rocks, mountain formation, water’s role in sculpting terrain, and how to interpret geological features while traveling. Through engaging lessons and hands-on activities, you’ll learn to see the world through a geologist’s eyes, whether you’re hiking, visiting coastlines, or flying over vast landscapes.

What will we cover?

  • The rock cycle and how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks form and transform.
  • Plate tectonics and the forces behind mountain ranges, earthquakes, and volcanoes.
  • How rivers, glaciers, and oceans shape canyons, coastlines, and other landforms.
  • Techniques to analyze landscapes using maps, satellite images, and geological clues.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Identify common rock types and explain their formation processes.
  • Describe how tectonic activity creates mountains and natural disasters.
  • Recognize the role of water in shaping landscapes like rivers, canyons, and coastlines.
  • Apply geological principles to interpret landscapes during travel or outdoor activities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course - a good standard of English and an interest in geology are the only requirements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures/discussions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a notebook if you wish to take notes. No other costs.
