What is the course about?
The course is an introduction to graphic design and illustration with strong emphasis on developing creative thinking skills and learning how to generate ideas and outcomes in response to project work that is set on the programme.
The course will also introduce you to a wide range of contemporary practitioners working in the fields of graphic design and illustration and will encourage you to visit exhibitions and events, to deepen your learning. The course will also enable you to put together a portfolio of graphic design or illustration work for interviews for further study or jobs.
What will we cover?
There will be projects exploring typography, logo design, drawing and editorial illustration, postcard/flyer design, packaging design and design for advertising.
If your interests lie in graphic design, projects set during the last few weeks of the course can focus on this. Similarly if your interest lies in illustration, you can work on illustration projects during the latter part of the course.
You will also be introduced to a range of practical techniques and processes that are relevant to the subjects covered. These will include cut and paste, lettering, observational and experimental drawing, painting and collage.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Define and analyse a design problem
- Generate and develop ideas in response to a set brief
- Use a range of art materials and processes with confidence
- Have gained practical experience in the different areas of graphic design and illustration.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is ideal for those who are new to these areas, for those wishing to study for personal development, those wanting a change in direction or to refresh skills, or for those who want to try new ways of working.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be group discussions, individual tutorials, lectures, demonstrations and practical activities. With practical art and design courses, it’s always recommended that students develop and build on the skills they have learned in class in their own time.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
An A4 hardback sketchbook and a pen
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can develop your skills further on VK554 Illustration: stage 2, VK340 Illustration for editorial, design and advertising, VK521 Graphic Design stage 2 or compliment your illustration skills with a range of courses in illustration, Graphics, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
