What is the course about?
This course is a progression from introduction to pattern cutting I. You will develop a dress block to your size for woven or stretch fabrics then, pattern cut a dress of your choice. There will also be an opportunity to build on any previous skills and understanding and develop new techniques within the realm of pattern cutting to support your progress on the course. The goal is to create a pattern to be toiled to fit and pattern ready to make in a final cloth.
What will we cover?
• Draping on the stand
• Creation of a dress block to your size for woven or stretch fabric
• Transferring a design into a paper pattern
• Fitting toile's and amending your pattern accordingly.
• Completing a pattern toiled to fit ready for final cloth
Experienced learners will;
• Work towards a pattern cutting featuring detailing such as pleating, ruffles and/or gathering.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Create a dress block from measurements or adapted from an existing bodice block
• Create a pattern from draping on the stand
• Compare different methods of pattern cutting see what aspect works for you
• Pattern cut a dress of your choice/design
• Fit a toile and amend/alter your pattern after
• create a finished pattern ready to be made in a final cloth.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Although this is a beginners course, some existing pattern cutting skills and equipment knowledge is required.
This course is also suitable if you are experienced in clothesmaking and have a good understanding of sewing pattern terminology.
You also should be able to follow written and verbal instructions to support hand-outs and health and safety information. You need to be able to use numbers and do simple calculations and take measurements.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice and one to one instruction and guidance. All work can be completed in class. There will be handouts to support any topics which will also be uploaded to google classrooms, and any other relevant information such as links to websites or videos.
This course, is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations and handouts etc. and may be asked to complete learner progress records. You can find help via the student help centre on the City Lit website.
Please note it is important that you sign up and log in to your course Google classroom prior to the first session. Joining details will be sent to you via email (check your junk/spam folder).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Access to basic materials and resources are available as part of your course.
A Notebook and Pen will be useful to take notes and store samples. You may also wish to use a digital camera to record your work.
Dependent on your progress on the course, you may require further materials. Your tutor will be able to advise on this.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Introduction to Pattern cutting III is the next course in this series where you can work on your own project using what you have learnt so far. Your skills will also be useful on the Clothes making III or Sewing on Sunday III sessions. Please browse the website for upcoming course dates.

Rachel has BA degree in Fashion Design from the University of East London specialising in Womenswear, but has a keen interest children's and menswear. She currently works as a freelance pattern cutter with experience working in all areas of the industry from the high street brands like ASOS to the designer high end and Bridal. Whether its casual tees or evening gowns Rachel has done it all. Rachel enjoys sharing these skills with others and believes in more making and mending their own clothes and just finding a fun creative outlet through fashion.
