What is the course about?
TED talks and TEDx talks have become a global sensation since they were first shared on the TED.com website, YouTube and other channels. Discover what’s involved in connecting with a local TEDx talk that connects with a theme relating to your specialism, with tips on how to craft, pitch and present a talk. These skills and knowledge can also be used for other presentations.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.

What will we cover?
Overview of TED and TEDx, connecting with a TEDx event, crafting, pitching and presenting a talk. Tips on how to network, and share your ideas.

By the end of this course you should be able to...
Understand what TED and TEDx talks are, how to connect to TEDx events on a theme that relates to your specialism, craft, pitch and present a talk.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is open to everyone interested in TED and TEDx talks. Online research through the internet including social media such as Instagram will be helpful however you don’t have to have social media to do the course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through a mix of tutor instructions, group work, homework and feedback sessions.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no other costs. Bring your phone or tablet if you use them for social media.
Gavin Freeborn is a creative communications specialist working across marketing, communications and social media, teaching in Art and Design plus Computing at City Lit. His other skills include being a professional photographer and yoga teacher. With over 20yrs experience working on private consultancy commissions and public sector including Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Fashion and London College of Communications at the University of the Arts London (UAL) and Leeds Beckett University, Gavin studies, practices and teaches these specialisms. Gavin enjoys teaching adults at City Lit, through theory, demonstration and student practice. He loves helping people learn how to use social media professionally including for their businesses, understand networking online and offline, including body language and to explore other interesting areas of creative communications such TEDx talks. The best thing is seeing students improve in class and afterwards where many of them keep in touch with Gavin through social media mainly through @freebornlive Instagram.
