An exciting opportunity to explore the world of illustration as a means of telling visual stories across a variety of illustration genres, from advertising through editorial to children’s book illustration.

What is the course about?

Build on ideas and skills as an image-maker within a supportive, creative studio setting. Through a series of projects, you will learn new research and drawing strategies and build your confidence in design, composition and visual narrative. Above all, you will be exploring your own visual language whilst learning how best to visually communicate ideas and narrative.

What will we cover?

• Explore different approaches to communicating an idea.
• Experimentation with different materials.
• The varying relationship between text and image and how they work together.
• Narrative formats and their purpose, function and relationship to the audience.
• The practicalities of illustration practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Identify and describe how to research, generate and communicate a visual idea
• Explore and use a variety of media with confidence
• Recognise and explain the relationship between text and image
• Communicate a narrative through a single image and a sequence of image
• Present ideas and visual artwork discussing format, purpose and intended audience.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous experience is necessary but some drawing skills are an advantage. Ideal for complete beginners and those looking to re-spark their illustration ideas.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is short, intensive and studio-based. You will be guided through a series of practical tasks, supported by demonstrations. Students are encouraged to participate in group discussions.You may want to bring some additional research and development to support your progress on the course. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Digital arts, Graphics & Illustration and Photography.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials and equipment will be supplied as part of the course however if you do wish to bring your own equipment or particular media you wish to work with, feel free. It would be useful to bring with you some visuals and any inspirational drawings, sketches that will aid your development.
