What is the course about?

This friendly and structured reading club is designed for post-beginners of Irish (typically with 1-2 years of study). Using a guided reading approach, the course focuses on pronunciation and vocabulary development through short, accessible texts. Sessions are supportive and interactive, helping learners build confidence in reading aloud and understanding Irish in context.

What will we cover?

  • Guided reading of short Irish stories or adapted texts
  • Vocabulary building strategies
  • Pronunciation practice and intonation
  • Basic grammar reinforcement through context

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Read short Irish texts with improved pronunciation
  • Recognise and use a wider range of vocabulary
  • Understand key grammar patterns in context
  • Feel more confident reading aloud in Irish

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for learners at CEFR A1-A2 level. You should be able to:

  • Understand and use familiar basic everyday expressions and basic phrases
  • Participate in basic conversations on familiar topics

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

  • Before class: You’ll be asked to read a short section of the text to prepare.
  • In class: We’ll explore the text together, focusing on vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar through pair work, group discussion, and tutor-led activities.
  • Outside class: Optional vocabulary review and pronunciation practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

To begin with, we will be using:

Short Stories in Irish for Beginners by Olly Richards published by Hodder & Stoughton

ISBN: 9781529377200

Students are therefore advised to obtain a copy of this book, which they will find useful.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will advise.
