What is the course about?

The course aims to help students improve their understanding of the Irish language and to continue gaining insights into Irish culture.

The tutor will decide the topics to be covered in conjunction with the learners when the course begins.

- understand more complex sentences and grammar
- discuss cultural matters accurately.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is intended for learners who have studied Irish 3 upper or have the equivalent level. Please contact the Languages department if you are unsure of your level.

You should also be able to:

  • understand details of authentic conversations of moderate length and complexity (e.g., interviews, adverts, news)
  • understand specific details and general information from routine telephone calls,
  • follow routine instructions (e.g., for a game, recipe, using equipment or installing computer software),
  • understand articles from the press or other authentic sources and produce a written summary covering the main points.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

William Brady

William Brady is a lecturer at St Mary’s University, Twickenham and is from Dublin. In 2019 he received his PhD in English Literature from Trinity College Dublin and has presented his research in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Croatia. He writes and lectures on contemporary literature, war writing, and psychogeography. A passionate Gaeilgeoir, he is on the committee of Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain, which promotes and organises events relating to Irish language and culture in London. He is also a contributor to the Nuacht Mhall podcast, which delivers news and current affairs at a gentle pace for learners of the Irish language.
