Whether you wish to learn Italian in order to make your visits to Italy more enjoyable, or because you'd like to speak with family and friends in their native language, this course will provide the groundwork for you to begin your journey towards fluency. Our emphasis is on speaking and listening skills so that you can begin communicating quickly in Italian. Once you've completed this course you can continue with Italian beginners: module 2.

What is the course about?

This course aims to introduce you to the basic aspects of the Italian language and to enable you to take part in simple conversations.You'll learn the necessary vocabulary and grammar for basic communication, and you'll lay the groundwork for future learning. The course is "intensive" in that it takes place twice a week, so you can cover the same language content as our standard course, but in a shorter amount of time.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Based on Chapters 1-4 of Nuovo Espresso 1 (published by Alma Edizioni - Italian version)

Topics: greetings; introductions; alphabet and spelling; numbers; the time; say how you are; going out to eat; leisure activities; likes and dislikes.

Grammar: the verbs to be, to have and to go; the formal and informal way of addressing someone; the present tense; forming negative sentences.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-greet people
-introduce yourself
-exchange personal information (name, nationality, job etc)
-tell the time
-order food at a restaurant
-talk about leisure activities
-express likes and dislikes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for complete beginners - no previous knowledge of Italian required.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Ottavia Castellina Tutor Website

Ottavia Castellina is an art historian, photographer and tutor. After gaining a degree in Art History at Turin University she completed an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication. Over the past years she has been teaching Italian, art history and photography both in Italy and in the UK, while her photographic work has been internationally exhibited and published. She currently works as a photography lecturer at Genoa University while organizing workshops and courses in a range of different contexts and institutions.
