Improve your level of Japanese on this communicative course where you will have the opportunity to develop your oral and listening skills as well as consolidate your reading and writing skills. Suitable if you have completed 'Japanese '3 lower: module 1' or equivalent.

Description

What is the course about?

In this course, you will be able to increase your fluency in understanding and speaking Japanese, consolidate the basic structure of the language and also extend your knowledge by working on more complex grammatical structure and functions. You will acquire a greater understanding of Japanese culture and customs.

What will we cover?

Opinions, direct and indirect questions, casual expressions, clauses, Kanji in sentences, Kanji compounds, today’s Japan.

• Exchanging your opinion about life in Japan ( food, transport, habit or people etc )
• Passing on someone’s message
• Talking to your friends
•Use of formal, informal speech
• Describing things or people, your preference
• Talk about organising a party and what to prepare ( food, drinks, booking shops, games etc.. )
• Make recommendations
• Understand Japanese culture and current affairs (news, comics, drama)
• Understand authentic conversations
• Understand Kanji in sentences
• Write Kanji and compound words.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have completed Japanese for Busy People 1-revised edition 3, book 2
( Lesson 1-6 & 8*partly ) or have an equivalent knowledge of the language and be fluent in Hiragana and Katakana with some basic knowledge of Kanji.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• active students’ interaction
• emphasis on speaking and listening skills
• pair and group work
• role plays
• use of realia, pictures and authentic material
• use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate.

Chikako Nakagawa

Chika has over 27 years of experience as a Japanese teacher, 23 of which she has spent at City Lit. Her work was recognised with a Teacher of the Year award in 2017. She has a teaching diploma and a Degree in Fine Art. Since coming to the UK from Yokuska, Japan, in the late 1980s, Chika travelled extensively as a performance artist, taught Zig and Zag Japanese on the Big Breakfast TV show, and wrote pieces about Japanese life for various publications. Chika encourages her students to experience every aspect of Japanese culture, which she supports by introducing food, onsen, music and etiquette in her classes, as well as running special film night events at City Lit. Chika is constantly researching new methods to introduce students to the joy of learning, encouraging self- discovery and connection through class activities. Chika’s love of art and performance is reflected in her inspirational teaching materials, including original hand drawn certificates for student achievements which are displayed in the City Lit 100 years exhibition. Teaching and learning Japanese is a joy that Chika wants to share with everyone.
