This course introduces complete beginners to Japanese language and culture, combining essential communication skills with an exploration of Japanese art history inspired by objects at the British Museum.
After four classroom sessions on Fridays evening at Keeley street, the class will visit the Japan Gallery at the British Museum on Saturday .3rd October 2026 from 10:00 to 12:00.

What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Use numbers to tell the time, talk about days of the week, and describe time periods
Exchange basic greetings
Give and request personal information (name, phone number, email)
Talk about countries and nationalities
Describe places to go and things to do in Japan
Become familiar with basic Japanese phonetics and characters
Gain introductory knowledge of Japanese art history through objects in the British Museum
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Complete beginners and an interest in Japanese Art.
You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach: - active students’ interaction - emphasis on speaking and listening skills - pair and group work - role plays - use of realia, pictures and authentic material - use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
A visit to the Brtish Museum with take place on Saturday 3rd October from 10:00-12:00

Noriko came to London to do sociolinguistics research on linguistic politeness. She has taught Japanese language to adults and university students throughout her research years. After completing her thesis and degree, pondering the next direction, she has realised that she has had more joy teaching Japanese and meeting people who love learning Japanese for a variety of reasons. So she decided to continue to teach Japanese as her main occupation. Noriko also works as a public service interpreter. She is honoured to help people in different circumstances in life by helping their communication. City Lit has recently given Noriko new challenges of teaching some unique courses. One is to teach the basic Japanese and apply them to objects and inscriptions held at the British Museum. The other is to let student encounter numerous onomatopoeic expressions in Japanese.
