Time: 14:00 - 15:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street

If you have played jazz styles and are familiar with some standard tunes, this course is a great way to develop your technical and musical skills in 'comping' and soloing.

What is the course about?

Consolidate and develop the work covered in jazz guitar 1. Play more advanced harmony in a jazz context, and study more standards.
Tutor: Branco Stoysin [external website].

What will we cover?

Allied to a study tune, we will work on arpeggios, modes & scales, chord shapes, playing a melody, improvisation, rhythms for 'comping', walking bass/chord work, and guitar ensemble playing.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Learn new repertoire
- Enjoy greater facility using scales to improvise over a chord progression
- Play in time well, with a confident jazz style
- play with confidence as part of a group.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from you course, you should be conversant with the basic jazz chords (major 7th, dominant, minor 7th, half-diminished shapes), know the note names on the finger board up to the 12th fret, be able to play major and minor scales, demonstrate reasonable fluency at reading chord symbols and music notation & guitar tab.
You should have played tunes like "Blue Moon", "Nuages", "Samba de orfeu", and 12 bar blues.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through group playing sessions, with some solo playing usually by turn. Daily guitar practice and completion of homework tasks are essential to your progress and the smooth running of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All music teaching materials will be supplied. Please bring manuscript, notebook, pencil, guitar tuner and an acoustic guitar.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Jazz guitar 3 next term.
Jazz harmony and ear training 1.

An excellent course that balances theory with playing and that gives you all the tools to build your jazz guitar player.

Amazing Jazz course giving you all the tools you need to become a serious Jazz guitar improviser offering you decades of experience that you can take on board within a few weeks. You would benefit from revising some Jazz theory beforehand, but not absolutely necessary as [tutor's name] who is a great teacher is good at explaining complex Jazz theory in layman's terms for people like me. It's the best thing I have ever done with my life! Thanks

I learned a lot from this course especially how to use moveable string sets and patterns and shapes for the pentatonic scale. We used the sting sets to put together arrangements of 2 jazz standards. I agree that you must put a lot of work in outside the course to get the most out of it. I would say it’s principally a course on how to play chord melody jazz guitar – that’s fine but not how the course was advertised or what I was expecting.

[The tutor] covered supporting chords for voice leading and connecting vertically and horizontally on the fretboard. It's quite a lot to cover in 10 weeks especially to deliver a performance at the end of the course.
More time for review in the class would be ideal but there is a bit of content to cover and learn. Practice is a must.
