What is the course about?
Prepare to play basic standards that involve harmonic/melodic/rhythmic issues, i.e. standards that are generally 12 or 16 bars long (including 12 bar blues) and which involve regular II V I (cycle of 5ths) progressions. You will study fundamentals of jazz style and piano voicing.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.

What will we cover?
Each lesson includes preparatory work, practising to backing which uses common harmonic progressions, and rehearsing chords and scales. We study and play a chosen standard tune every 2 to 3 weeks. Learn approaches to improvisation over standard tunes. Read sample solos. Study how to create basslines.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to practise
- Play jazz voicings and appropriate rhythms
- Memorise standard tunes
- Understand concepts of building intros, accompanying, following a lead sheet, using harmonic understanding to improve your delivery of a song.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have good piano playing and reading skills, absolute minimum Grade 5, and be fluent in all major and relative minor scales.We hope you have an interest in jazz piano and experience of listening to jazz recordings. Experience of studying harmony will be of advantage. The Pop piano courses are the ideal preparation for this course. You will need to be able to play at least triads and their inversions at the piano.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will play your own piano, the class will play together and there will be tutorial input with appropriate individual help / advice and practising to rhythm section backing tracks. Lead sheets will be provided, and there will be examples to write and/or copy, and class 'hand-outs' or audio guides on some topics.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Use manuscript paper. Organise a way to record yourself playing tasks. Course resources are available in the google classroom.

Angèle Veltmeijer is a multi-instrumentalist who plays flute, clarinet, saxophone and keyboards. She enjoys playing a wide variety of musics, from folk to jazz and circus to West African highlife. She has performed and toured in Europe and Africa, playing in venues ranging from the Royal Albert Hall to many local venues. She has played live and recorded with Ivy Benson, Orchestra Jazira, Brian Kennedy, Annie Whitehead, Jimmy Somerville, Carol Grimes, Bessa, Alfred Karri Bannerman, Bob Graham, and Big Bands including lead alto in Morley College jazz orchestra, Studio 9 Orchestra, Sussex Jazz Orchestra, Brighton Big Band. Her own ensembles include Angèle Veltmeijer Quartet and Angel’s Horns. Angèle composes and arranges, and her music has been played and recorded by several of the line-ups she has been associated with. Angèle learned to play the saxophone at City Lit with Kathy Stobart whose firm yet compassionate teaching has remained an inspiration. Angèle enjoys passing on the thrill of making music. At City Lit she has taught saxophone, flute, jazz and pop piano, musicianship, jazz improvisation and transcription.
