What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at those who have already completed several years of jazz piano study. You should have playing experience and understand chord symbols, scales and modes, chord voicings and swing and Latin rhythms. A reasonable standard of music reading is an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
On the morning of Day 1 we will meet in the keyboard room for a workout on bass lines and chord voicings. After a break from 1-2pm, we'll move to a room with two acoustic pianos to practise accompanying each other on your individual tune choices. Day 2 will follow a similar format with an instrumentalist for you to take turns accompanying on the grand piano. During the week between classes you should be prepared to practise and refine the accompaniment for your chosen piece in readiness for the performance.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please have manuscript for class notes. All music materials are supplied for class and in the Google classroom, but you may also work on a jazz standard of your own choice. We recommend you record the presentations.
