• Developing techniques to improve your solo piano performance
• Exploring a range of left hand and right hand styles
• Expand your repertoire of standards
What will we cover?
• A variety of left-hand styles to use when playing unaccompanied piano, including bass lines, chord voicings, 'stride' left hand, etc
• Two-handed chord voicings and block chords
• Creating a solo piano arrangement
• Approaches to improvising a solo
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Apply the concepts and techniques learnt to your own repertoire
• Play unaccompanied with more confidence
• Deploy a variety of left and right-hand styles
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is aimed at players who have already completed several years of jazz piano study. You should have playing experience and understand chord symbols, scales and modes, chord voicings and swing and Latin rhythms. A reasonable standard of music reading is an advantage, but not a prerequisite
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
On day 1 the tutor will show different ways of presenting standard tunes in a range of styles, including swing, blues, modal and Latin jazz. You will have the chance to try these and adapt them for your own choice of material. Day 2 will focus on performance with tutor feedback. After morning rehearsals and an hour lunch break each student will give an afternoon performance of their piece in an informal concert setting, on the grand piano. During the week between classes you should be prepared to practise and refine your piece in readiness for the performance.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please have manuscript for class notes. All music materials are supplied for class and in the Google classroom. We recommend you record the performances.
