A performance class for singers who have completed levels 1 and 2. Improve your vocal technique, jazz and blues style, and learn relevant musicianship.

What is the course about?

Developing the work of jazz singing 1 and 2, explore and improve your ability to perform in the jazz idiom.
Learn jazz tunes that a singer would be expected to know. Increase your appreciation of time feels and harmony.

What will we cover?

Ongoing work to improve vocal technique.
Improve phrasing and timing in a song.
Free the rhythm of the lyric - moving towards improvisation.
Learning new repertoire, and learning to source your own.
Musicianship matters pertaining to improvisation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- know what to practise, and how to practise
- be accustomed to researching songs/performers
- have a clear grasp of jazz styles
- use the mic with confidence in solo performance
- be able to perform with confidence
- use the class appraisal of your solo effort to develop your ability to perform.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Singers should have completed jazz singing 1 and 2 successfully. Entry by approval from your previous tutor. Newcomers will audition and show they can deliver a jazz tune well.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Warm up and technical exercises sung together every session. Learn tunes/solos/exercises by following your tutor's demonstration, and/or led from the piano. Solo presentations, giving and receiving constructive criticism. Sharing ideas and repertoire. Practice of material between classes is essential.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are advised to record parts of class for revision/practice at home. Music materials will be provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Jazz singing advanced; jazz vocal improvisation.
