This fun, three-day class introduces you to the art of casting metal from found objects or simple wax carvings. You'll create a series of unique items and learn how to add findings, repair holes, and polish your work to a professional finish. Compared to other jewellery-making techniques, casting offers instant results.
What will we cover?
Delft clay casting
Cuttlefish casting (subject to availability of cuttlefish bone)
Experimental casting using materials such as chickpeas, spaghetti, beans, and water
Optional exploration of casting with cubic zirconia
Use of a melting furnace, with optional demonstration of handheld crucible pouring
Recycling scrap silver by casting ingots, which can be rolled into sheet or wire
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Select suitable items for casting
Create a successful Delft clay mould
Create a successful Cuttlefish mould (subject to availability)
Repair holes, solder findings, and polish finished pieces
Complete one or more pieces of jewellery
Understand the basics of silver recycling
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for complete beginners. However, as casting is a specialist skill, you may find it helpful to attend a beginner’s jewellery-making course beforehand.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through practical demonstrations, and you’ll have access to a range of samples for inspiration. There is no formal work outside class, but you are welcome to bring your own items or ideas to explore.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please wear sturdy footwear, and old clothes or protective clothing, as casting can be messy.
Bring small items you'd like to reproduce in metal - trinkets, natural forms, toys, etc. (keep them small, as larger items become heavy quickly). There will be plenty of trinkets to use, so don’t worry if you’re not sure what to bring.
Pewter and bronze will be provided for practice. You may also bring scrap silver or purchase sterling silver grain (minimum 20 grams) from suppliers such as Cooksongold or Bellore Rashbel. Your tutor may have some silver to purchase as well.
We aim to cover cuttlefish casting, but cuttlefish bone supply may be limited. If possible, bring your own - either collected from the beach or bought from a pet supply shop. Ensure it is genuine cuttlefish bone, not a reconstituted product.
If you want to cast with Cubic Zirconia, please bring your own.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
