This course focuses on the often-overlooked but vital process of finishing jewellery to a high standard. You’ll explore a range of tools and techniques for polishing, texturing, and refining your work. Topics include dealing with fire scale and fire stain, planning your finishing process, and tackling difficult areas such as cleaning up around gemstones. We’ll also touch on plating in theory.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is not suitable for beginners. You must bring your own unfinished or previously completed pieces to work on. A basic understanding of jewellery-making techniques is required.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Teaching will include group discussions, demonstrations, short presentations, and one-to-one tutorials. You are encouraged to bring tricky or incomplete pieces to discuss and work on during the course. There is no formal homework, but you may wish to continue working between sessions if possible.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring your unfinished jewellery, or pieces you’ve completed but aren’t satisfied with. All necessary finishing tools and materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own tools if preferred.

Trained at the Royal College of Art, Dutch born designer Louise Seijen ten Hoorn lives and works in London where she creates one-off pieces, small production ranges and commissions from her studio in Pimlico. Louise works predominantly in metal, as well as materials such as plastic and rubber, to create jewellery, objects and small sculptures.
