Explore alternative cinema that captures the spirit and culture of Japan while expanding your knowledge of Japanese life, history and art.

Zatoichi is directed by Takeshi Kitano, who drew on his background as a comedian, entertainer and established filmmaker to win the Venice Film Festival Silver Lion award for best direction in 2003.

The film is set in the Edo period and is based on a popular fictional character (named ‘Zatoichi’) from Japanese film and television. The character is distinctive for being a blind person who makes his living as a masseur and gambler while secretly fighting the forces of evil as a highly skilled blade master.

The Edo period was characterised by local feuds between rival gangs, often captured in the popular dramatic genre of ‘Jidaigeki’ that typically showcases samurai, farmers and merchants engaged in outlandish sword fights. Zatoichi follows some of the same violent

conventions from ‘Jidaigeki’ drama, but with the inclusion of more comic and stylized elements. At the heart of the film is the classic story of a wandering hero who, trying to help the innocent overcome injustice, gets caught up in a bloody tussle for revenge. Kitano’s genius turns this narrative into an empowering film that ultimately offers a very Japanese celebration of humanity.
