What is the course about?
This is a practical course. You will explore Laban’s Eight Effort Actions, learning to embody these practically through sequential experential movement tasks. You will develop a greater range of expressive movement and will gain confidence in connecting to your creative impulses, unlocking movement potential. Laban Effort Actions are a core element in actor and movement training, and enable a performer to identify and express physical and emotional characteristics different from their own, and to communicate these in physical characterisation.
What will we cover?
You will explore the component elements of Laban Dynamics and Motion Factors, using these to investigate the eight Effort Actions.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Execute the individual dynamic elements (Motion Factors) with confidence, and be able to combine these to demonstrate the eight Laban Effort Actions. This provides a clear toolset that will enable you to develop your vocabularly or physical expressin, characterisation and your ability to act on impulse.
Extended your range of expressive movement qualities and have developed a range of technical tools to equip you with approaching physical characterisation from a Laban perspective.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Beginners and improvers. Please be aware that we will be moving through all levels of space and with a variety of speeds. Therefore, a good level of fitness and flexibility is advisable.
You will need to be able to follow & respond to verbal instructions, possibly even while moving therefore understanding of English language is essential.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be solo, paired and group work. The classes are build up gradually, starting with a warm up that prepares for and tunes into the theme of each session.
This process (for the most part) does not require a ‘copy the teacher’ type learning, but instead students are asked to physically engage with and explore given instructions to find a deeper connection into their own body, which in turn will act as a base for communication in pair and small group work.
Regular attendance, punctuality and physical commitment is expected, in order to facilitate progress of class material and team work. Some homework may be given to deepen understanding.
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Wear comfortable appropriate clothing that allows for ease of movement.
No shoes required, in fact bare foot moving is advised (slip-proof socks are permissible).
As we engage in some contact work with other students, it is essential to observe good personal hygiene and wear clean movement clothes to class.
