Course Dates: 26/06/20 - 24/07/20
Time: 14:00 - 17:30
Location: PS - Photography Studio

Explore nature, landscape and environmental photography in the classroom and in the field. You will learn to create images with impact, whilst developing your own visual style and a personal project.

What is the course about?

This five week course will explore nature and environmental photography. Teaching, discussions and practical exercises will take place in the classroom and in the field. The work of published photographers and artists will be examined and critiqued to help inform students own work. Students will be supported in a group and on a personal level to create images with impact, whilst developing their own visual style and a personal project.

This is a theoretical and practical course. Knowledge of your own camera functions is required, but this course will help you to use them more effectively, developing your understanding of different depths of field, the use of natural light and composition to help you develop a story within your images.

Please note that no editing will be taught on this course although you will be required to print off images between lessons.

What will we cover?

- the principles, concepts and practice of nature and environmental photography and the issues informing it:
- how to develop a creative, interpretive and critical approach to your photography and that of other photographers and artists;
- how to develop a personal photographic project and to tell a story;
- photographic skills for your particular level of ability;
- develop a greater understanding of your equipment and how it can be used to best effect;.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- understand and apply creative interpretations to your nature and environmental photography
- start to develop your own creative style
- understand how to use your photographic equipment to take photographs that tell a story
- produce a creative small photographic project which reflects your own style and enhanced abilities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for those with some practical experience of photography who would like to develop their DSLR skills. DSLR cameras will be made available for use on this course.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lessons one, three and five will be taught in the classroom.
Lessons two and four will be taught in the field.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a camera, notebook, pen and a scrapbook (A3) in which you will be able to develop projects.

Students will be encouraged to do research and keep a learning journal/ scrap book and bring images for discussion – either their own or some they have found by other photographic artists.
