What is the course about?
Starting with an introduction to materials and techniques the first session will take place in the studio at the City Lit. We will then meet at different locations to explore ways of interpreting a range of London landscapes, using both monochrome and colour materials. You will be provided with a list of meeting-places in the first session.

- Properties of different drawing mediums
- Composition and structure
- Colour drawing media
- Drawing on location.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Create compositions with good structure
- Work quickly in a sketchbook in response to a landscape
- Capture light and shade (tonal contrast)
- Employ lively drawing techniques effectively
- Start to use colour expressively/ appropriately
- Explore a range of drawing materials.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
All levels are welcome.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Practical work on site, after the first session in the Keeley Street studio, short demonstrations, one-to–one tutoring and some group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Small sketchbooks and basic drawing materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring larger sketchbooks if required, and advice will be given on materials to buy.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may wish to continue to develop your interest in working on location by joining 'Painting landscape and the city' or 'Watercolour: cityscapes on location'
Your tutor will advise you on options individually during the course.
