What is the course about?

We will learn simple and effective techniques to develop your own unique stamps in rubber and plywood for block printing on fabric and paper using Adobe illustrator. We will create simple etched and outlined motifs that could be transformed into a range of patterns when printing. We will also create a multi layered stamp that could be used to produce multi coloured layered prints. You will receive technical support individually and group tuition and use your own drawings or images from the web to create your stamps.

What will we cover?

- Learn the very basics of Adobe Illustrator, drawing tools and tracing images
- How to configure a digital file for laser cutting
- Transform your own drawings into digital and modify them to be suitable for block printing
- Make a multi-layered stamp.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Draw and trace simple images in Adobe Illustrator
- Design and modify drawings and images to make your own personalised stamp design
- How to prepare files for laser cutting
-Understand the techniques of etching and outlining your stamp design.
- Gain an understanding of the laser cutting process and techniques
-Complete your own personalised stamps using rubber and plywood ready to use for block printing

Intermediate learners will be able to:
- Create their own stamps from scratch rather than working from a template
- Further develop their own designs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner’s course, no previous experience of laser cutting needed.
Some experience of using Photoshop or Illustrator is desirable but not necessary as the basics will be taught.
We will be working with iMacs, so some familiarity with IOS is desirable.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be introduced to the digital suite, software, facilities and laser cutter.
You will see examples samples for reference and you will learn the basic drawing tools in illustrator to practice modifying and creating designs suitable for making block printing stamps.
You are encouraged to take part in the group discussions and share feedback
You will be taught with demonstrations and are encourage to participate in group discussions and share feedback.

PLEASE NOTE that we do not print on this course, the focus is on creating your own stamps ready for printing. We.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- A USB stick to take home any files you create.
- A notebook, pen and visual references for inspiration such as drawings, photographs, images from magazines etc.
(You could also bring those visual references on the USB).
