What is the course about?
The course aims to introduce you to the Latin language or remind you of what you may have learned before, revising and building on your previous knowledge of the language.
What will we cover?
We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin, a textbook designed for adults learners based on
original Latin sources, starting with an adaptation of a comedy by Plautus. Reading will be combined with
grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall be studying the conjugation of verbs, the
declension of nouns and adjectives, etc.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read and write simple Latin sentences
- have some insight into the derivation of English words
- have some insight into the world of Rome
- demonstrate basic knowledge of the first two conjugations of verbs
- demonstrate basic knowledge of some declensions of nouns and adjective.
- demonstrate basic knowledge of some clauses
- demonstrate basic knowledge of gerunds.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is suitable for students who have some experience of Latin or, even if they haven’t studied it before, they are familiar with the grammar terminology and structures of languages which have declensions, verb aspects etc. It is also for students who have perhaps started a Latin level 1 before but haven’t been able to complete and don’t want to start all over again.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach and aims at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work. The pace will be fast and challenging but fun. Please note that students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do 2-3 hours homework per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
