Abigail Ferstman

An introduction to Latin, or a reminder of what you have forgotten if you are rusty. Based on the second edition of Reading Latin (Cambridge University Press: 2016, 2 vols).

This course will be delivered online. See the ‘What is the course about?’ section in course details for more information.

What is the course about?

The course aims to introduce you to the Latin language or remind you of what you may have learned before, revising and building on your previous knowledge of the language.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We shall be using the textbook Reading Latin, a textbook designed for adult learners based on original Latin sources, starting with an adaptation of a comedy by Plautus. Reading will be combined with grammar instruction and grammatical exercises. We shall be studying the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, etc.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-read and write simple Latin sentences
-have some insight into the derivation of English words
-have some insight into the world of Rome
-demonstrate basic knowledge of conjugations of verbs
-demonstrate basic knowledge of declensions of nouns and adjectives.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner, although some of you may wish to join the class for revision purposes. As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the traditional approach, but aims also at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work. Please note that students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do 2 hours homework per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Sidwell, Cambridge University Press (Second Edition 2016, 2 vols): Grammar and Exercises (ISBN 9781107632264); Text and Vocabulary (ISBN 9781107618701); and Reading Latin: an Independent Study Guide (ISBN: 9781107615601). Everyone is at the same level on the first day, when they say beginners they really mean beginners. Your knowledge is built from the ground up and you find yourself learning every week, even in spite of your self at times.

Learning Latin is hard work, but both the tutor who is fantastic and class colleagues made attending classes enjoyable.

It provides a good start to learning Latin. Potential students need to recognise that it is not enough just to turn up; a commitment to significant work outside class is necessary to make worthwhile progress.

Course was ok, but a lot of information to take onboard in terms of verb, noun and adjective conjugations/declensions, especially if you have not studied a language since school. Tutor was friendly and knowledgeable.
